There’s the dishwasher that needs to be loaded, the kids yelling in the back of Zoom meetings, not to mention the clutter and mess piled up in your makeshift office – all of which can definitely hamper your productivity.

You set aside a dedicated workspace and avoid household distractions so that you can finally get that to-do list tackled.

Essential Furnishings to Invest In

Every office needs an excellent desk and chair setup. Try not to use old furniture lying around the house for work purposes, though, as prolonged periods of use can wreak havoc on your back and posture.

Instead, Evoluted suggests opting for ergonomic office furniture that is designed to support your body through long periods of sitting. Having a small sofa and coffee table setup will also be necessary, particularly if you plan to have clients over.

But financing these new furniture items can be expensive. To make your purchases more affordable, we suggest going slow - invest in your chair and desk, to begin with, and thrift the rest. Buy now and pay later options are also viable options to help set up your space.

Go Minimalist

The easiest way to drown out all the clutter and visual noise? Go minimalist! According to Moving.com, minimalist decor such as neutral color palettes and pared-down belongings can make a small living space appear larger.

In addition, when you go minimal, the items you do have tend to stand out and shine. However, minimalism doesn’t have to mean clinical or overly sleek.

You can use pops of color here and there to add personality and a bit of whimsy. Just be strategic about where you place your colors - statement walls and framed art are a good place to start.

Spruce up Your Decor

If you’re like most individuals who just started working out of their homes, your space is likely a makeshift one. We often tend to set up shop in an old guest room or perhaps even the basement.

However, the decor in such spaces can be dated and incongruent with the work at hand. To counteract this, we suggest purchasing new items to spruce up your home office and get rid of that makeshift feeling.

You can do this by adding lots of indoor plants and greenery (these are great for getting the air purification going). Another option is to add statement pieces like a leather chair or funky carpet.

Soundproof Your Space

A big part of getting your work done with ease is minimizing the auditory distractions. Adding thick materials like rugs, plush furniture, and acoustic panels will help keep the noise from the rest of the house at bay.

Be sure to check for any air leaks around the room, and fix them using caulk. If the sound persists, opt for sound-blocking office dividers to make your space look stylish and put together. Last resort option? Noise-canceling headphones!

The Good News

Sure, setting aside a home office area as a distraction-free place where you can work will improve your focus and productivity – but there’s another benefit, too. These kinds of renovations also raise your home’s appraisal value, which will be an extremely welcome bonus down the road, if and when you decide to sell.

Your home office setup should be a place where you can hunker down and get stuff done. What it shouldn’t be is a place that invites distractions and provides fodder for procrastination

If you’ve been looking to set up your work-from-home haven, this is your sign - be sure to implement these tips to make the most of your space!
